1-Day Letter-Cutting in Stone
Wolds Workshop is pleased to offer a 1- day practical course which aims to introduce you to the process of letter-cutting in stone, taught by professional mason, carver and letter-cutter, Matthias Garn.
Learning outcomes:
This class will guide students through the practical techniques of letter-cutting in stone. Students will be taught the fundamentals of letter design, spending the morning drawing and then tracing their lettering onto the stone, ready for carving. They will spend the rest of the day cutting the lettering, continuing to refine the forms when time allows.
Suitable for all ability levels.
What to bring:
Apron or old clothing
Sturdy pair of shoes
Camera for documenting your progress

Food and drink:
There is a small kitchen available for use. Tea and coffee will be provided, but please bring your own lunch.

Matthias Garn
Matthias co-runs the building conservation workshop, Matthias Garn + Partner. He is a Master Stonemason and Stone Carver from Dresden who has lived and worked in the UK for over 20 years, first with Wells Cathedral and then with Dick Reid. He started his own business in 2004, a workshop which specialises in historic building conservation, complex masonry, carving and letter-cutting. He is also a tutor in the Masonry Department at York College.
